The Superjesus Essentials

The Superjesus Essentials

Emerging in the mid ’90s with a bracing melodic drive, The Superjesus have endured and evolved to became a veteran voice in Australian alt-rock. Across a succession of lead guitarists, singer and rhythm guitarist Sarah McLeod has remained the Adelaide band’s clear-eyed emotional centre. The undisguised self-reflection in her lyrics has been a calling card since their breakthrough 1997 single, “Shut My Eyes”, which foregrounded McLeod’s cathartic delivery against gnawing hooks and more darkly dreamy turns. The Superjesus scored the inaugural ARIA Music Award for Best Rock Album for their 1998 debut album Sumo, bolstered by the brooding riffing of lead single “Down Again”. Helmed by English producer Ed Buller, 2000’s Jet Age matched its predecessor’s platinum sales while showcasing opposite poles of moody simmering (“Gravity”) and jangly pop/rock (“Enough to Know”). McLeod went solo after the band split following 2003’s Rock Music, but a new version of The Superjesus reunited for touring a decade later and hammered home a familiar head rush on their 2023 singles “Money (We’re Only in It For Love)” and “Lights Out”.
