Slayer's legend is based on primal ferocity, but their albums have no shortage of nuanced moments. The way Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman downshift into rippling power riffs on “Blood Red” is as impressively nimble as drummer Dave Lombardo's hairpin tempo turns on “Kill Again”. Even when they hit hellish velocities (“Criminally Insane”), their sense of restraint is downright musical.
