Selects: Fort Romeau

Fort Romeau’s first new album since 2015’s Insides, Beings of Light, is a finely balanced mix of celestial house and techno intercut with gorgeous ambient passages. “The idea for this playlist is to give a kind of contextual overview of my own musical history and influences, the music that’s shaped my outlook and approach to making music over the years, both old and new,” the British producer/DJ born Michael Greene tells Apple Music of his Selects tracklist. “I've also included some of my own music and tried to sequence the songs in such a way that you can connect the dots between my music and artists that have inspired me, or that I feel have some kind of similar point of view or that resonate with me in some way.” His selections represent a broad overview, but there are moments that more directly reflect Beings of Light. “There is, for example, more of a minimal house influence on my new record,” he says. “The tracks ‘Ramona’ and ‘Power of Grace’ are inspired by the groovy alien percussion of artists like Margaret Dygas and Thomas Melchior, which combine with long-standing influences from US deep house, ambient and UK techno.” Of those formative sounds, Greene calls out Ron Trent and Chez Damier’s 'Morning Factory’, which he says “embodies so much of what I love about house and techno. Deep, trippy, groovy with a big warm bassline, the perfect balance of head and body music and totally timeless style.” And he calls ‘Love’ by Luke Slater “one of my all-time favourite tracks from one of the greatest to ever do it. It perfectly captures that mysterious emotion between melancholy and euphoria, which for me is the essence of great electronic music and is particularly prevalent along the lineage of UK techno and hardcore.” Hear all his Selects and add any favourites to your library.
