“Buffalo Stance”, Swedish musician/model Neneh Cherry's 1988 debut single, captured the late-'80s zeitgeist while opening the door to music's next wave; it combined riotous rapping and skronking horns with a beat that borrowed from underground clubs and urban clamour. Since then, Cherry has made her musical mark by resisting categorisation. The dreamy yet pointed track “Manchild” presaged the ‘90s ambient wave; “Trout” flips Steppenwolf and Led Zeppelin into a pro-sex-ed strut; “Cashback” returns her to her jazz roots (her stepfather is trumpet legend Don Cherry); and 2018's “Kong” pairs proud, ruminative musings with a scratchy dubplate.
