Betty Wright Essentials

Betty Wright Essentials

Soul, funk, disco, hip-hop: Miami singer-songwriter Betty Wright didn’t just change with the times, she helped define them, shaping a history of modern black music from the mid-‘60s until her death on 10 May 2020. The singing is powerful and the tracks are iconic—“Clean Up Woman” (you’ve heard it), “Let Me Be Your Lovemaker” (you should hear it), “Where Is the Love”—but Wright was just as well known for what she did behind the scenes as on centre stage. She coached everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Lil Wayne, and provided samples for Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, Chance the Rapper and so many more. Listen up and see if you can spot ’em here.
