About Van Coke Kartel

Van Coke Kartel is an Afrikaans alternative rock band renowned for its high-energy performances and socially conscious songs. Francois Van Coke and Wynand Myburgh of the Afrikaans alt-rock band Fokofpolisiekar formed the quartet in Bellville, Cape Town in 2007. The group released its debut self-titled album that year, showcasing its penchant for writing trenchant lyrics discussing South African sociopolitical issues. The record helped the group gain a cult following and was nominated for Best Afrikaans Rock Album at the South African Music Awards. As Van Coke Kartel’s profile grew, the band earned slots opening for the likes of Metallica, Chris Cornell, and Thirty Seconds to Mars. Though Van Coke Kartel hasn’t released new music since 2015 and officially disbanded in 2017, the group occasionally reunites for live shows.
