DJ-Kicks (DJ Mix)

DJ-Kicks (DJ Mix)

On his first official mix since 2008’s Fabric 39, Robert Hood proves why he has remained one of Detroit techno’s most enduring DJs. Much like his own muscular, minimalist productions, which account for more than half the tracklisting, Hood’s mixing relentlessly hones in on the meat of the groove. From start to finish, the set toes a tightrope-narrow path of pinging synth sequences stretched taut above cavernous kicks. The energy starts off at peak time and stays there, but it’s never monotonous, thanks to careful pacing. It hits an early apex with Slam’s sleek, steely “Remain” and quickly inches higher with Marcel Fengler’s hammered-metal “Thwack”, but it’s never more thrilling than when Hood’s test-tone bleeps flash, which they do frequently—blaring alarms of a near-constant state of emergency.
