As suggested by the title of his second album, What Happens In Lagos, Ajebutter22’s work acknowledges his hometown’s paradox as a city that’s both energetic and easy-going. This is reflected in the sprawl of his Afrobeat sound: from the mellow riddims and his gentler flow on “Ghana Bounce”, to the animated synthesisers, bass drops and throatier vocals on club-primed “Senrenre”. He’s also an expert in memorably sentimental bops, such as “Celebrate in Advance”, defined by its driving arpeggio, and his municipal call to arms “Lagos Big Boy”, which serves jittery breakbeats and rousing lyrics.
