The Pan-Africanist ideal never died—it morphed into hybridised sonic fragments that connect Joburg to Nairobi via Lagos and Accra. On “Marry Me (feat. Msaki)”, Afrohouse duo Black Motion pay homage to iconic South African sounds alongside singer-songwriter Msaki. “There are three elements to ‘Marry Me’,” they tell Apple Music. “We decided to do a song that would have a sound reminiscent of the ‘80s but with hints of the ‘70s and the ‘90s. There is a snare of the ‘80s disco and the church organ—we were channelling Brenda Fassie and her era, but also bringing it to 2020 with the drum progression. We were appreciating and celebrating the South African catalogue.” Alongside this bending of sonic eras, expect only the latest and greatest songs presenting the African continent in its lush entirety: whether they’re hip-hop, highlife, Afrobeats, alté, house, Afrobongo or kuduro. Africa’s time isn’t only now, it’s forever. So come catch a lick, and hype up your library by adding anything that vibrates in lockstep with your beat.
