About Zora Jones

Zora Jones' productions are as fluid, futuristic, and hallucinatory as her mind-bending visual artwork. The Barcelona-based artist's music is a pristinely crafted blend of grime, ambient, footwork, trap, and other influences, combining heavy bass with weightless textures. In 2012, Jones co-founded the creative platform Fractal Fantasy along with Sinjin Hawke, with whom she regularly develops online audio-visual pieces and collaborates during live performances as well as releases such as 2018's Vicious Circles. Originally from Austria, Jones played drums, guitar, and violin as a student, but found her surroundings to be limiting. She decided to move to Barcelona when she was 19, and she began to DJ soon afterwards. She met Hawke, as well as fellow DJs Azamat B and Martyn Bootyspoon, when the three had flown out from Montreal to play at a party in Barcelona. Jones traveled to Montreal and visited their event (Boomclap) when footwork legend DJ Rashad played a set, and the event inspired her to begin making music. After Hawke moved to Barcelona in 2011, the two formed the Fractal Fantasy collective and began collaborating on tracks and audio-visual work; the 2015 release Visceral Minds compiled music from the duo's early videos. Jones released a few tracks online, including the well-received 2013 track "Money Cat," but she decided to develop her style before making her official debut. She recorded 100 compositions, which she referred to as "ladies" rather than songs or tracks, and chose seven to be released as her debut EP, 2015's 100 Ladies. She also released Bootlegs 2015, which consisted of her boundary-pushing remixes of tracks by rappers ranging from Nicki Minaj to Lil B. In 2016, Jones released "Ruby Fifths," a collaboration with Chicago footwork producer Heavee. Visceral Minds 2, an ambitious 20-track compilation featuring Jones' collaborations with artists such as Jlin, Murlo, and DVA, appeared in 2017. A year later, Jones and Hawke made their vinyl debut with Vicious Circles, their first appearance on Planet Mu. ~ Paul Simpson
