Asa [Asha]

Asa [Asha]

Released in 2007, Aṣa's eponymous debut album positioned the singer-songwriter as a conduit expressing both the hopes and despairs of the modern Nigerian. Alternating between English lyricism and Yoruba expressions, Asa is an honest examination of the human condition and society at large. A body of work with a palpable conscience, its thematic musings flow out of it on the ecological “Fire on the Mountain”, sociopolitical “Jailer” and cautionary ballad “Subway”. Delving into more personal matters, Aṣa pays homage to her mother on the heartfelt “So Beautiful” while infusing a dose of hope into the poetic prayer that is “Eye Adaba”. Helmed by producer Cobhams Asuquo, the album soulfully blends folk, reggae, alternative pop, R&B and jazz. In addition to clinching France’s prestigious Prix Constantin award for new musical talent, the album received three 2008 Headies Awards, including Album of the Year, Recording Artiste of the Year and Best Vocal Performance for the arresting “Bibanke”.
