Not content with the state of 21st-century male-driven Afrikaans rock, Belgian-born South African singer/songwriter Karen Zoid first staked her claim in 2001 with an adaption of the popular folk song "Afrikaners Is Plesierig". Chart-toppers such as "Engel", "Deurmekaar" and "Small Room" followed, along with recognition as the Best Female Solo Artist in 2008 at the South African Music Awards. Zoid has earned her place in the upper echelons of women who rock.
