British Lovers Rock
Apple Music

In the mid '60s, rocksteady—that airy, lilting, gentle pulse—swept ska out of fashion and dominated Jamaica. But as the popularity of socially conscious roots reggae swelled in the early ‘70s, that breezy rocksteady sound drifted over to London via the expat community and was embraced as lovers rock. Sweet yet groovy, it made the punks sway and added a buoyancy that bled over into UK pop. Apolitical perhaps, but what place does politics have in romance?
