About Kenny Dorham
An often underrated musician, trumpeter Kenny Dorham was one of the prime sidemen in the original bebop movement, playing in the bands of Lionel Hampton, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Charlie Parke. In addition to his warm, energetic playing, Dorham was also a fine composer with an interest in Latin styles. In 1954, Dorham joined the first incarnation of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, then led a spin-off group for a time called the Jazz Prophets. The Max Roach Quintet hired Dorham to replace the late Clifford Brown in the mid to late ‘50s. During this time, and into the early ‘60s, Dorham recorded as a leader on Blue Note, releasing such classics as UNA MAS. He died in 1972 of kidney disease.
