Canadian-Indian singer Jonita Gandhi is among a wave of vocalists making innovative sounds in Indian film music, finding favour with industry titans like A. R. Rahman, Pritam and Salim-Sulaiman. • Born in New Dehli and raised in Brampton, Toronto, Gandhi credits her father for sparking an interest in Western classical singing. She studied at the Ontario Conservatory of Music while earning business degrees. • In 2012, she collaborated with pianist Aakash Gandhi and flautist Sahil Khan in YouTube videos, bringing Western pop sensibilities to Bollywood covers and earning millions of views. • An ardent fan of seasoned Hindi playback singer Sonu Nigam, Gandhi found herself performing as a backing vocalist on his 2012 North American tour. • The following year, she scored her breakout Bollywood hit came with “Chennai Express”, the title track for the action-comedy flick composed by Vishal-Shekhar. • Gandhi notched another hit with “The Breakup Song”, an irreverent 2016 track composed by Pritam for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. • A multilingual artist, Gandhi sings in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati and Bengali, among other languages. • In addition to her filmi success, Gandhi continues to make pop music.
