Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse Essentials

Nicknamed "Hotstix" after taking up drumming at the age of eight, Sipho Mabuse got his first professional break when he joined The Beaters during the mid-'70s. An artist who also plays the saxophone, flute, timbales, piano, kalimba and African drums, he is today recognised as one of the greatest South African musicians of all time. His biggest album to date remains 1983's Burn Out, which sold in excess of 500,000 copies—and the so-called "township jive" he helped to pioneer still influences hip-hop and other music and dance forms today.
