About DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
An antidote to the hardcore rap filling the airwaves near the close of the 1980s, Philly duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince spun rhymes about girls, summer, horror movies, clueless parents, and beating Mike Tyson--all over playful, decidedly old-school beats. While their 1988 classic album (of sorts) seemed to consign the pair to the short life of the novelty act, they rebounded to become regulars on the U.S. pop charts in the early ‘90s. Meanwhile, Will "Fresh Prince" Smith, with his rapscallion manner, took to acting, starring in his own top-rated sitcom. The pair stopped recording under said name by the end of the decade, with Jazzy Jeff continuing production work and Will Smith becoming one of the biggest stars in the universe.
