The sonic synthesis of African and American music led to an exciting new fusion in the first half of the 20th century. South Africa's poorer townships burst with marabi, kwela and mbaqanga music in the wake of ragtime, jazz and swing. With time, a sound evolved that mixed traditional African musical elements with electric guitars and big-band arrangements.
