About Paulo de Carvalho

The drummer and background singer for popular Portuguese band the Sheiks in the mid-'60s, Paulo de Carvalho found fame after stepping into the limelight as a soloist. Leaving the Sheiks in 1968, de Carvalho went on to win the Festival RTP of Song in 1974 and 1976. Infused by North American R&B, funk, and African music, he created some of the most exciting dance music to emanate from Portugal in the 1970s. De Carvalho has had a long involvement with the Festival RTP of Song, having made his festival debut in 1970. After winning the competition for the first time in 1974 with an interpretation of the Jose Calvario- and Jose Nize-penned "E Depois Do Adeus," he won with an original composition, "Portugal in My Heart," performed with the band the Friends, three years later. De Carvalho collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on two albums: Alana, released in 1994, and Carvalho, Ribeiro, Freitas and Others, released in 1999. ~ Craig Harris
