In April 2022, Loraine James released a sprawling, transportive album under her ambient moniker Whatever the Weather that used temperatures (“14℃”, for example) as a framework for the project’s energies and moods. Here, the North London experimentalist—whose work spans languid IDM to growling drum ’n’ bass—shares her own Selects playlist of low-key, introspective tunes, many of which inspired her recent work. “The theme of this playlist is mellow,” James tells Apple Music. “I wanted to reflect on my Whatever the Weather album, so a lot of my favourite ambient, or ‘soft’, songs are in here.” Among them is “Fake Five”, a delicate, dreamy cut by the Japanese producer Yasuhiko Fukuzono, also known as Aus, that zigs whenever you think it will zag. “Six or seven years ago, I was listening to a lot of electronic music from Japan, and his whole [body of] work is amazing,” she says. “I love the unconventional rhythms.” Later on, she closes the mix with Lyra Pramuk’s “Tendril”, a subdued, atmospheric a cappella refreshingly devoid of gimmick. “[Pramuk] is an amazing musician and this song is just breathtaking,” James said. “It takes me to another place.” Hear all of James’ Selects—our playlist where DJs and producers showcase their favourite tracks of any given moment, new and old—and add anything you like to your library.
