Lexie Liu: New Year Spiritual Nourishment

Lexie Liu has done it all. At 16, she participated in Korean reality talent show K-pop Star. At 18, she became the first Chinese artist to perform at the prestigious SXSW Music Festival. Then she found immense success on The Rap of China, and soon after began making huge waves in both the C-pop and global hip-hop scenes with her own brand of music that incorporates trap and R&B. This festive season, Lexie shares her exclusive playlist and how she keeps herself constantly invigorated in the New Year. “Chinese New Year is a period for me to do away with the past and get started on the next chapter. My most cherished part of the season is reuniting with loved ones at home, having a get-together dinner and watching the Spring Festival Gala on our sofa. This is one day I never got in trouble with my parents for staying up late.” Lexie says. “We used to light firecrackers together, but that’s quite rare now.” What music defines the New Year experience for Lexie? “For me, the New Year should sound warm, resolute, and confident. My theme song for the holiday is ‘Worth It’ by Roy Woods. With that song, I pump myself up and swagger when I walk,” Lexie says. Lexie’s playlist is an eclectic blend. “My playlist contains all the music I like to listen to after winter has arrived," she says. “There’s no particular order to it. I made this playlist around the concept of ‘spiritual nourishment’—music I use to feel invigorated throughout the day—as I prepare for the new year.” Lexie has a final message for her listeners before they press play. “Happy New Year and good health to you,” she exclaims. “It may sound trite, but I feel that happiness and good health are the most basic and important things in life. I hope everyone can be physically and mentally well for the new year!”
