Gin Lee: Lucky New Year

Hong Kong-based Malaysian singer Gin Lee has taken the Cantopop world and larger C-pop scene by storm with her vast vocal range and her dazzling performances in variety shows Sing! China, The Voice, and Super Idol. The versatile singer is constantly breaking ground, and 2019 was no different—she released her electronic-tinged R&B album Ukiyo-e as well as her smashing dance-floor collaboration with Jax Jones. Gin Lee shares her exclusive New Year playlist and what it means to be lucky, exclusively on Apple Music. “Chinese New Year is my favourite holiday other than Christmas, because it’s a precious occasion to reunite with family and friends.” Gin Lee explains. “My family isn’t very traditional, so there aren’t too many traditions that we follow. We eat vegetarian food for half the day on New Year’s Day because it was a tradition started by my grandparents. We also keep the floors unswept and wear red clothes. Red also happens to be my lucky colour!” “New Year’s music has to have traditional Chinese New Year’s elements, because they give out those festive vibes. For example, ‘Gongxi Gongxi’ (Congratulations and Happiness to You) is my favourite New Year’s song—I put it on my playlist every year. If I had to pick a theme song for 2020, it would still be ‘Gongxi Gongxi’.” “The playlist I chose for everyone is all about happiness and excitement; I hope the songs bring joy to listeners like they do for me. My playlist title is ‘Lucky New Year’. It takes from my Chinese stage name Xing Ni”, she says. Xing Ni literally translates into a person of happiness or luck in Chinese. “These are the New Year’s songs that I have handpicked for the listeners.” “Regarding Chinese New Year blessings, my favourite one is ‘May you achieve all your heart desires’, isn’t it wonderful when all your wishes come true?  So here’s my sincere Chinese New Year wish for everybody! Have a great one! ”
