Daniel Johnston Essentials

Daniel Johnston's career was both strange and strangely inspiring. Born in 1961, the Texas-based singer-songwriter became part of the indie rock community via his self-released cassettes of simple but affecting folk songs that spoke about his pop culture obsessions and his easily bruised heart. By the ‘90s, Johnston's work became known thanks to high-profile fans like Kurt Cobain and Yo La Tengo, and he found an even wider audience in the 2006 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, which presented an unflinching look at his talent and his struggles with schizophrenia. A hugely prolific musician and visual artist, Johnston produced somewhere in the neighbourhood of 20 solo LPs and dozens of collaborative records between the early ‘80s and his death in 2019.
