Code Orange Essentials

Code Orange's mid-'10s evolution from a slash-and-burn screamo act with hardcore tendencies into a sludgy metalcore unit was seamless. However, the Pittsburgh band, who shortened their name from Code Orange Kids in 2014, aggressively resist clichés. In addition to molten basslines, barking vocals and hulking downtuned guitars, Code Orange unfurl death metal-inspired growls and nails-on-chalkboard electronic spurts. Of particular note is "The Hunt", which boasts battering-ram-like industrial beats and Slipknot's Corey Taylor, and the burnt-sugar hard-rock churn of "Bleeding In the Blur", where Reba Meyers' lead vocals are especially bewitching.
