Baile Funk Essentials

Baile Funk Essentials

Brazil has long boasted the world’s sultriest dance floors. Baile funk, also known as funk Carioca, made them positively drip with sweat, setting drum machines into overdrive and smashing together electro samples the way physicists collide atoms. The genre emerged from Rio’s favelas in the mid-’80s: Innovators like DJ Marlboro, on tracks like “Rap Da Felicidade”, reworked Miami bass beats while local rappers spit lyrics in the vein of gangsta or reggaeton. In recent years, it’s both influenced and drawn from EDM, hits like MC Créu’s “Dança do Creu” pogoing over Dutch-style drums that could steam up the windows in just about any nightclub in the world.
