When rock kapak, Malaysia’s local brand of hard rock, made the mainstream in the mid-1980s, KL boy Awie stuck out as a rock icon-in-the-making at age 17. As the frontman of Wings, Awie (born Ahmad Azhar bin Othman in 1968) wowed audiences with a magnetic presence and a voice perfect for thunderous arena anthems. After five multi-platinum albums with the band, Awie went solo in 1994 and widened his appeal with pop-infused mid-tempo gems and power ballads. With a stellar acting career also under his belt, Awie continues to pack stadiums.
