It’s no wonder that the indie dance-pop quartet Yumi Zouma are concerned with a sense of place. Before they’d even officially formed as a band, the members found themselves scattered around the globe following the 2011 earthquake in their hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand, forcing them to write and record their first EPs by sharing files with one another online. Eventually they’d gather in the same room to make their next three albums—Yoncalla, Willowbank and this one—which all bear the names of places significant to the group. But the region their music most seems to evoke is Ibiza, specifically the island's breezy, gently danceable Balearic sound of the late ’80s. That wistful, laidback style can suit a range of big feelings, and they’re all on display on Truth or Consequences—its title a tribute to the New Mexico town of the same name, but also a litmus test one can apply to their view of the world, whether personally or geopolitically. To be sure, this record’s lyrics focus on the interpersonal, navigating emotional and physical distance and the highs, lows and in-betweens of relationships. But no matter how forlorn things get, you can't help but feel soothed by the breathy vocals, glistening synths and overall balm-like atmosphere.
