What So Not Essentials

What So Not—originally a duo comprised of Australia's Emoh Instead and Flume—started out with a sound, not a style. There was flickering future-house like 2011's “Love Theme” and swaggering trap like “The Quack (Club Dub)”; the common denominator was playful sound design, chest-massaging bass and wide-open space between kicks and claps. Since Flume left in 2015, What So Not has continued to push the limits of bass music, drizzling melted synths over crisp boom-bap on “Adieu” and fusing indie guitars with 8-bit bass hijinks on “Divide & Conquer”. The sound keeps evolving, but the sense of mischief remains.
