Soda Stereo Essentials

It's almost impossible to overstate Soda Stereo's importance to Latin rock. Formed in Buenos Aires in '82, just as Argentina was emerging from dictatorship, the trio seemed to embody the country's newly experimental optimistic spirit. Together they forged a moody synthesis of new wave and post-punk that was helmed by Gustavo Cerati's distinctive liquid voice. The band evolved, becoming stars across Latin America and inspiring legions of imitators before breaking up in '97. The sold-out stadiums and fervent crowds at their final '07 reunion tour confirmed the group's enduring appeal.
