U.K. electronica wunderkind Matt Cutler, better known as Lone, debuted in '07. Influenced by acts like Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin, he first released three IDM albums full of downtempo beats and lush melodies. The producer pulled a stylistic 180 on his '10 breakthrough, Emerald Fantasy Tracks, and its '12 follow-up, Galaxy Garden. Gone were the low-key grooves and in their place were the intricate rhythms and ecstatic melodies of late '80s/early '90s icons like Orbital and Carl Craig. No mere revivalist, Lone continues to mix vintage beats with forward-thinking innovation.
