Elliot John Gleave, better known as Example, burst onto the British music scene in 2007 with his debut album What We Made. Combining skittering dance beats with cerebral vocal hooks and raps, his songs are like glimpses of sunshine amidst cloudy ruminations—sometimes melancholy but always captivating. This amalgam of house samples and hip-hop is an example—pun intended—of a playful, self-conscious trip-hop that's both thoughtful and humorous. It's an alchemy that has led to stellar collaborations—including with grime stars Wretch 32 and Tinchy Stryder as well as EDM all-star Calvin Harris.
