About Prince Jazzbo
While never as acclaimed as other '70s DJs including U-Roy or Big Youth, Prince Jazzbo recorded a string of flawless roots-reggae hits for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One label in the early '70s. He recorded his monster hit "Crabwalking" on the first take and followed it with "Crime Don’t Pay", "Pepper Rock", "School" and "Imperial I". When a promised album failed to materialize, Jazzbo began to record for other producers, which resulted in the superb 1976 album NATTY PASSING THRU with Lee Perry. Jazzbo launched Ujama Records in 1977, offering a shelter for older DJs such as U-Roy and I. Roy, and championing acts other producers overlooked such as Zebra, Manchez, and Horace Ferguson. In 1991, Studio One finally released his album CHOICE OF VERSION, some 18 years late, to ecstatic reviews.
