Three decades into his career, Neil Young sounds as battered and indignant as ever on Greendale, an ambitious rock opera undertaken with his go-to jam band, Crazy Horse. Spinning interlocking tales about various characters in a fictional small town in California, the band break up rugged 10-plus-minute garage rockers “Carmichael” and “Grandpa’s Interview” with brief, beautiful moments like “Bandit”, which finds Young’s talent for casting ruminative folk spells still very much intact.
