For the Home Session series—in which we challenge artists to record intimate versions of their own tracks, alongside covers of their favourite classics—R&B singer-songwriter Manana chose songs that help keep his head above water. “These are my favourite songs to sing right now, songs that were written in a difficult time,” he tells Apple Music. “[My song] ‘Patiently’ and ‘Keep It Up’ by Rex Orange County, in particular, are two songs that have kept me going through the last few years.” His Home Session’s other two tracks—“Dance Therapy” and “Pulchritudinous”, both lifted from his sophomore EP, But could the moments in between—speak to his jazz training and choral background while giving his poignant lyrics an even more intimate setting in which to bloom. He credits his ability to mine the full depth of emotion to living under lockdown. “All the seclusion gave me an opportunity to learn how to produce my own music,” Manana explains. “I previously wasn’t as involved on the production side of the songs as much. I think my workflow is a lot more efficient as well, so quite a lot changed.”
