Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ has always been one of Nigeria’s most enigmatic voices, receiving critical praise for his daring music arrangements, arcane visual choices and biting lyricism. Originally signed to popular record label Chocolate City, Brymo first achieved popular acclaim as the melodic heartbeat of the label’s much-loved supergroup Choc Boiz, contributing an iconic chorus to Ice Prince’s 2011 monster hit “Oleku” before orchestrating his own undisputed breakout moment one year later with the release of “Ara”, off his sophomore album #TheSonOfaKapenta. After leaving Chocolate City, the singer veered away from the pop leanings that brought him into the spotlight, effectively combining the layered messaging of the Yoruba dirges of his childhood and the cinematic feel of his soul impulses to create a lane for himself on the indie circuit. 2013’s Merchant, Dealers & Slaves is a masterful piece of work that is regularly regarded as the singer’s magnum opus, but other albums like Klĭtôrĭs and Oṣó detail the roving mental process of the singer, while projects like Yellow and Theta have presented a panoramic view of Brymo’s life.
