Big Scarr Essentials

When Memphis MC Big Scarr died in 2022 at the age of 22, he was likely still quite a ways away from really leaving his mark, but his promise was impossible to miss. The MC born Alexander Woods—Scarr comes from the souvenirs he retained following an intense car accident as a teenager—got signed to Gucci Mane’s The New 1017 Records not long after releasing his very first single, 2019’s “Make a Play”. And there was no one else he’d rather have run with. “Wop is a legend,” Scarr once said. “He’s my momma’s favourite rapper. We used to ride around in the car listening to him.” Before his passing, Scarr, of course, made music with Gucci, but also with the foremost buzzing MCs of his era: Pooh Shiesty, Foogiano and Key Glock. He told as much of his story as one could on his lone solo release, 2021’s Big Grim Reaper, and had plenty of ears awaiting the next, having just been named to XXL’s esteemed 2022 Freshman Class.
