Zs have seen many incarnations, from being a Bang on A Can-esque mini-orchestra through an edgy progressive rock band to an immersive electronic ensemble. In each of these approaches, the band have provided class and refinement to difficult music. The sounds are still sharp-edged and challenging, but with a marked restraint that stands in contrast to the sometimes over-the-top approach of their D.I.Y. peers. Their recent efforts have found the group making use of flayed electronic noise, free jazz guitar and spirited African-inspired rhythms.
