The Jam Essentials

The Jam Essentials

The Jam filtered and condensed British guitar music, giving ‘60s beat-pop a sharp post-punk update without losing the good mod's love of soul. At their ferocious peak, they were a riot of stuttering power chords, barked vocals and withering scorn, as heard on their hits “Going Underground” or “The Eton Rifles”. Singer Paul Weller's relentless need to keep moving took them from their scratchy R&B beginnings through guttersnipe pop, and on to psychedelia, funk and soul; each style was a musical filter for his social observations from working-class England.
