A major mover since the early '60s, Ron Carter is probably the most renowned bassist in jazz, a status attributable not only to his combination of massive chops and supernal swing, but also his broad range. The same man who could deliver the down and dirty "Call Sheet Blues" with Herbie Hancock or float on gossamer wings in a duet with guitarist Jim Hall on "Alone Together" could just as handily unload some funk-inflected licks on "Uptown Conversation" or lay into a bold, brassy big-band swing on "Con Alma".
