Since emerging in the late ‘00s, Oathbreaker's genre-bending output has proved radically eclectic; elements of many types of heavy music—including black metal and shoegaze—permeate their sound. The Belgian band pulverises, but the emotional impact of their songs, through dynamic tension and poetic lyrics, sets them apart. With her extraordinary vocal range, Caro Tanghe haunts moody, sparse soundscapes (“Stay Here/Accroche-Moi”) and screams demonically over monster riffs (“Glimpse of the Unseen”). As she growls through oceans of overdrive on “No Rest for the Weary”, her words are just as oppressive as the sonic maelstrom.
