Nat Adderley Essentials

Nat Adderley was an innovative cornetist and ace composer who contributed mightily to soul jazz and hard bop. His most beloved tune, “Work Song”, was recorded in 1960 with The Cannonball Adderley Quintet and features his deeply reflective cornet style and gospel-inspired weightiness. His approach to soul jazz is further realized on “Gospelette”, a large-ensemble lament in which his tearful notes fall onto Herbie Hancock's soft chords. Adderley could also really blow—check out “Two Brothers”, a spirited hard-bop piece showcasing his and brother Cannonball's seemingly telepathic link when playing breathless loops and runs.
