Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard was often more inspired by funk and soul than jazz. The 1969 tune “Soul Turnaround”, with its tight, Booker T.-like organ licks, is an early example, while “Midnight at the Oasis” has psychedelic wah-wah and one of his most vocal-inspired leads. By the late '70s, he created sides like “Windjammer”—electric funk with a dash of rock heft in its sturdy beat.
