Before Bright Eyes blossomed into an operatic outfit, Conor Oberst was writing quiet, intimate character sketches inspired by Bob Dylan and John Prine. As he matured as an artist, The Smiths and The Cure would teach him to embrace grandeur, Fugazi would inspire him to rage at injustice and Sebadoh and Leonard Cohen would show him how to wear vulnerability as a badge of honour.
