On his debut, DJ Quik laid the groundwork for the G-funk sound, pulling from a wide range of soulful samples. “Tonite” leans on “Tonight” by Kleeer and “Tonight Is the Night” by Betty Wright—and still manages to be both spare and danceable. “Deep” lays a razor-fine guitar loop over horns from Fred Wesley. And “8 Ball” dips into perhaps the most recognisable funk bassline of all time, courtesy Herbie Hancock, nestling it among ad libs and scratched vinyl while Quik kicks his relaxed party rhymes.
