“I just sat on a chair with my guitar and sang—simple as that,” Vincent Vallières tells Apple Music about his approach to his Home Session. On this exclusive three-track set, the Montreal singer-songwriter revisits an old favourite from his 2003 album, Chacun dans son espace, in a new, stripped-back form. “I played ‘Manu’ ’cause I hadn’t played it in forever, and I was missing that song,” he says. “A wind quartet came over to record arrangements written by my pal Philippe Brault. We’ve known each other for years, but we’d never worked together before. I saw firsthand what a clever arranger he is, and how he genuinely listens as a producer.” Then Vallières reimagines the more recent “Homme de rien”, from 2021’s Toute beauté n’est pas perdue. “That’s one of the songs that the audience seems to connect with the most in the solo show I’m currently touring.” But the most out-of-leftfield is his subdued, stirring cover of “Compter les corps” [“count the bodies”] by Granby, Quebec, punk band Vulgaires Machins. “My friend Salomé Leclerc joined me in the afternoon,” he says of the duet. “Although it dates back to 2006, it’s still the track that best sums up all the impotence I’ve been feeling since the Russians invaded Ukraine.”
