Wang Leehom is an internationally minded Chinese pop star who was among the first to bring rap and R&B elements to Mandopop in the early '00s. Thanks to a childhood in the U.S., Leehom was exposed to a wide variety of musical styles, and when he hit the Chinese market, he brought those ideas with him. He has plenty of sweet, piano-backed ballads in his catalogue (“Your Love”, “Kiss Goodbye”), but on cuts such as “Now Is the Time”, he raps over clattering beats and string swells. As he's broadened his scope, he's merged hip-hop with Chinese folk and opera to create a style all his own.
