Gal Costa had an almost frightening range as a singer. She had a clarion call of a voice that could carry across the sertão unamplified, but she could also croon a jazz number like you’re the only person in the room. Her sense of timing was impeccable—her voice was literally a rhythm instrument—and she brought exhilarating energy to every genre, be it jazz, baião, folk rock, Tropicália or psych.
