The Delights of the String Quartet 

In the Classical period, when instrumental works became prominent, they found no more an eloquent vehicle than the string quartet. Quartets by the likes of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert are examples of true chamber music that is, at its best, a friendly conversation among equals.
