- 樂團想要將這張專輯命名為《Africa Talks To You》，但為了回應 Marvin Gaye 在六個月前發行的專輯《What’s Going On》而改名為《There’s A Riot Goin’ On》。專輯製作期間，團員之間的不睦加劇，當時樂隊靈魂人物 Sly Stone 已經染上毒癮，導致大部分專輯製作最後成為 Sly 一個人在床上錄音，加上機械鼓聲與合成器的結果，其他成員則是分開錄音，透過後期製作疊加上去。新穎的製作技術製造出更加扭曲、尖銳的聲響元素，張弛有度的 Funk 節奏打破了主流音樂定下的限制和障礙。單曲〈Family Affair〉可以說是樂團關係的真實寫照，一方面直面矛盾，另一方面又對大家來之不易的情感毫不掩飾地讚美。相比樂隊以往迷幻靈魂樂的樂觀明麗，經歷變化與動蕩的 Sly 開始對社會政治和黑人問題進行思考，正因如此，這張專輯較以往的創作風格略顯黑暗和消極。對於處在黑人運動動盪時期的年代，這張專輯的誕生可以說為在美國身處底層的人們注入了一針強心劑，也讓更多人對社會矛盾問題進行深刻的自省。
