- The title for Gunna’s heavily anticipated WUNNA album—his first full-length project since 2019’s Drip or Drown 2—is an acronym for “Wealthy Unapologetic N*gga Naturally Authentic”. The Atlanta MC has also claimed that it represents an alternate identity, a chance to step away, if only momentarily, from the franchises that made his name, Drip Season and Drip or Drown. Thankfully for Gunna fans, however, the MC we get in WUNNA isn’t all that different from the man who taught us the meaning of drip. Across beats from a veritable wish list of can’t-miss producers including Wheezy, Turbo The Great and Tay Keith, Gunna raps in effortless non sequitur about clothing, jewellery and women. He’s joined by frequent collaborators Lil Baby, Young Thug and Travis Scott, and also Roddy Ricch, who guests on “COOLER THAN A BITCH”, a song dedicated to anyone mistakenly believing that they’re operating on the same plane as he is. Across 18 tracks, WUNNA is everything fans could have wanted from an MC who’s dedicated his career to establishing himself as a trendsetter. In fact, the only place the drip is missing is in the title.
- In 2018, Gunna was everywhere. Standout albums from Travis Scott, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Torey Lanez and even Mariah Carey, among others, featured verses from the Atlanta MC. Having spent the better part of a year rapping his way into the consciousness of his peers' fans, Gunna has fashioned his Drip or Drown 2 album—the sequel to his 2017 EP—as a coming-out party. “I feel like a lot of my new fans just know me from [Travis Scott’s] ‘Yosemite’ and Drip Harder and some of my recent activities,” the MC told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “But on this album, it's gonna put the icing on the cake and let them know what kind of artist I am.” Embracing a spotlight he once patiently stood just to the left of, Drip or Drown 2 is a 16-track jaunt through Gunna’s world. As an orator, his voice is light—just a couple of registers above a whisper—and even when injected with melody, it can sound like he’s singing to himself. It makes you feel as if you’re privy to the MC’s innermost thoughts, which typically span a deep appreciation for luxury fashion and automobiles, how he would prefer women to act around him and the things money has allowed him to do for his family. “Speed It Up”, one of the project’s standouts, is particularly interesting for the giant gaps of space he leaves between words. Frequent collaborators Wheezy and Turbo the Great (who both serve as executive producers) handle the bulk of the production. Despite his lengthy collaborative resume, Gunna saved the guest spots on Drip or Drown 2 for hometown heroes Lil Baby, Young Thug and Playboi Carti. His many industry relationships aside, the MC knows that he’s still on the come-up. “One thing I have learned from putting out music, and just growing, is to know even when you've got good feedback and you're doing good, there's still another level to go to,” he told Zane Lowe. “It's never like, 'Oh, I'm good, or I'll do what I need to do.' There's still more to be done. I’m just getting started.”

About Gunna
As a kid growing up just south of Atlanta, rapper Gunna, a.k.a. Sergio Kitchens (born 1993), used to practice what he and his friends called “six-month runs”: cut all extraneous spending for six months and save, save, save. The discipline and deferred gratification served him well: after spending his late teens and early twenties quietly exploring his style and releasing only one mixtape, Gunna broke big in 2016 with a feature on Young Thug’s “Floyd Mayweather”—a co-sign that helped him bypass the hustle and made him one of the most sought-after new voices in the game. Later that year, Thug’s YSL label released the first of his multi-part Drip Season series, which synthesised his influences into an airy trap sound: smooth and mellow, blending spacious beats with a relaxed, highly melodic delivery and off-the-cuff humour. Between a couple more seasons of Drip and features with Travis Scott (“Yosemite”) and Metro Boomin (“Space Cadet”), Gunna also forged a productive collaboration with Atlanta rapper Lil Baby, releasing Drip Harder in late 2018. The pairing was anointed GOAT status from a sometime GOAT himself, Future, with whom Gunna also featured on “Unicorn Purp”. Like Thug, Gunna has a thing for fashion; “drip” is his slang for personal style. “The salesmen that know me in Barneys say I smell like Biscotti mixed with Creed,” he raps on “Idk Why”, from his official 2019 debut album, Drip or Drown 2. In subsequent years, Gunna propelled himself to new heights, with albums like WUNNA (2020) and DS4EVER (2022) crystallising his status as one of Atlanta's most dynamic stylists. The latter LP produced "pushin P", a single assisted by Young Thug and Future that bubbles with charisma and understated yet emphatic authority. Unfortunately, it was the last moment before Gunna was arrested and jailed as part of Georgia's RICO case against Young Thug. Following his release from jail in late 2022, Gunna returned with a Gift & a Curse. Fueled by his indelible single "fukumean", the single reestablished his status as a master of melody and dismissive cool.
